Yellow-billed Magpie

I'm a big fan of magpies. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, was in Alaska, watching black-billed magpies spreading their tail and wings to alight on a post.
Yellow-billed magpies are endemic to California. I have to drive one to two hours to see them, and when I do, they are very wary and very smart. Additionally, their irridescence shows best in moderate sun, making exposure of whites/blacks difficult - so capturing a decent picture has been not possible [yet...]
Yesterday, I discovered they had lovely green tails in the morning light. Wasn't able to capture the green, or even get a sharp picture, but even a phantom loch ness pic reminds me of their incredible, simple, graphic beauty. |
