Rufous-crowned Sparrow
Rufous-crowned Sparrow
Aimophila ruficeps
Sibley's describes this bird as "Uncommon and local". That it is. I saw a flock of them 3 years ago, and have been chasing for one ever since. A few weeks ago, Bill Walker found one we shot (in bad posture, and poor light).

Now that I'm getting more confident about bird-songs, the next thing I'm learning to intuit is habitat. On our weekend hike up the mountain, we crossed some sage-y habitat, and I thought "this would be a good place for a Rufous-crown - right elevation, right plants, let's give it a try." Sure enough! This bird popped up, gave me 3 shots and was gone. Not great, but decent pic - I'll take it :-)
