Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea
The arctic tern plummeted straight down hitting the water with a splash.

The tern struck the water in the shallow cove of the lake like a falling rock. Then, quickly rising into the air, it hovered above the same spot. Poised with beating wings, the bird dropped again and rose with a small fish in its beak, then continued flying along the open water between melting lake ice and the shore.

We knew this particular tern from the year before. We called him Itigak.
