Black Oystercatcher Haematopus bachmani
Last night I read about how oystercatchers look for a bivalve whose shell is partially open, and then in a lighting strike aim for the back of the shell, where they cut the muscle that closes the shell, leaving them free to eat the meat at leisure.

So this morning, I went out in search of oystercatchers - we have about 2000 oystercatchers on the US west coast (from Alaska to San Diego), so you can only find them in a few spots.

And lo and behold, besides the various other things the oystercatcher eats - it eats urchins! I've never seen a sea urchin in the wild, (only in curio stores with little light bulbs inside, and the spines broken off). Wow!
