For birds with a pronounced difference between male and female (sexual dimorphism) as much time is spent finding a mate, a territory, and then mating, as is spent in rearing of the young.

For all animals, the stronger the dimorphism in a species, the more likely the species will be polygamous . As a corollary, the tasks of raising offspring are less likely to be shared amongst the sexes.

Alcids are sea/land birds and are the northern hemisphere's equivalent of penguins. There is little visual differences between sexes in most alcids - and indeed they both share the nest work. (think of the images of male penguins nuzzling the chicks eggs on their feet, while fighting the snowstorms).

Think about that concept of sexual dimorphism in biology ladies and gentlemen...how much sexual dimorphism is there in your family ;-)
