Willet Catoptrophorus semipalmatus
I've been wanting to get pictures of willet flash patterns for years. But it was always too tough. Yesterday, however, I spent some karma points and everything was perfect - had the 400, had the light, had the winds, and had just the right location. Now if only those willets weren't so darn fast in flight! :-)

There was a fabulous article in Birding a few years ago that talked about why Marbled Godwits and Willets congregate together. Turns out that hawks go for birds with strong flash patterns - i.e. willets. When godwits mix in with the willet flock, in the melee that follows a hawk sighting, the godwits make it harder for the hawk to zero in on the willet, and in return the willets draw attention away from the godwits.

Remember that, the next time you're in dangerous territory - dress down and hang out with the rich high-fashion locals! ;-)

Have a great weekend!
