Hutton's Vireo Vireo huttoni
From last Friday's shoot with Bill and Mary. Mary is a superb birder, and kept saying "Hutton's Vireo's" and then "Ruby Crowned Kinglet's"... and I saw an RCK with a red crown, and then all the rest were RCKs whose crown wasn't showing. So I took a pic of the only crownless RCK that stood in one place for more than 2 seconds.
Sigh.

Got home and read Sibley's on Hutton's Vireos to refresh the field marks. Sibley notes its shape is almost exactly the same as the RCK but lacks the black patch behind the secondaries. Also vireos have a hooked bill. Uh ... let me look at that RCK photo again. Yay!

For me, this is one of the odd joys of birding with a camera - (re)discovering the bird afterwards...

Thanks Mary!
