Tufted Puffin
Tufted Puffin Fratercula cirrhata
A brutal, brutal trip to the Farallon Islands. Puffins love remote places. Always thrilled to see them, but this time, after 3 hours of stomach-churning upheaval...an overcrowded boat (I couldn't move my lens without hitting the person next to me), and that peculiar smell of sea mammal ... After one particular jolt, some combination of random movements resulted in my MarkIII becoming unlocked from the lens, and flying across the boat deck. A quick grab from the water on deck; so close to Davy Jonesing into the ocean below, followed by only one expletive deleted. Can't say I'd recommend that trip!

My companion, the fabulous wildlife photographer Yamil Saenz, got this.
