The classic lbj ("little brown job"). All brown with a touch of russet = california towhee.
I remember when I first started learning to id birds that I saw this and thought - "no way - there's no distinguishing features at all". Later, as I learned how birders id birds, I realized, that's the distinguishing feature! Another zen moment
