White-headed Woodpecker Picoides albolarvatus
Back from a wonderful vacation with my daughter in King's Canyon National Park.

Where we stayed, we got almost all our target birds within a half a mile from our cabin. It was an amazing place. You could watch white-headed woodpeckers literally, all day long.

I love wolf lichen* - When I started studying chilkat tlingit blankets I discovered that the tlingit used wolf lichen as the source of their lovely green dyes for the blankets. Wolf lichen was the most widely used dye lichen for west-coast native americans from the arctic to arizona.

However, before you try doing this yourself at home, do recognize that wolf lichen is poisonous. Its name reflects its use as a poison for wolves in northern Europe.

* The green stuff on the tree is not moss. It's wolf lichen. Moss needs a LOT of rain to survive - so it's only common in the rainforests. This is lichen, a mixture of fungi and algae.
