Carduelis from latin glosses to linet/wigs which translates as flax-hoppers (linet meaning flax [i.e. linen] and wigs being creatures that never stay still and constantly hop about). Which is a good description of finches. Psaltria is from the latin and means the female player of the cithara (a greek lyre). So there you go. A pretty fine latin name indeed.
