Ring-billed Gull Larus delawarensis
From our SCVAS "Bird Photography in the Field" class this weekend. The students and the coaches all had a great time. And the students produced some fine pix!

This gull was standing on a 30" high post. It was 11am so the light was casting harsh curved shadows over its chest from the bill - ugly. Students couldn't see how to take a good shot of this willing bird. I explained to the students that they could use the trees across the parking lot as a green background for this gull (if the foreground bird is king, "green the queen" makes a great background). And that with the right position relative to the light, that the shadow would go away. This suggestion was followed by lots of "huh"? looks, so I sat down on the ground and took a few sample shots to show them.

The students were a really enthusiastic and fun bunch, with some real talent in the class. Haven't had so much fun in a group in a very long time! :-)
